MagicCon 7 | Vortrag | Männlichkeit in Herr der Ringe

Men in fantasy – tough guys marauding through the world with a phallic extension in the form of a two-handed sword to prove their tough masculinity?

Not for a long time. Especially, but not only, in The Lord of the Rings, the image of masculinity is much less toxic. The franchise was a pioneer of sorts.

But first things first:

  • How is masculinity defined in the first place?
  • What is the image of masculinity in the genre in general – and how has it changed over time?
  • What is “toxic masculinity” and how does it play into the theme?
  • Are men allowed to cry? (Spoiler: YES!)
  • And how is masculinity portrayed in Lord of the Rings?

In this talk, we will look at the definition of masculinity and how it has been portrayed in the vastness of the genre, particularly in film and television, over time.

Lecturer: Guddy Hoffmann-Schoenborn
Duration: 60 min  -  The Lecture will be held in: german

Guddy Hoffmann-Schoenborn has been a nerd blogger for over a decade, streaming, podcasting and youtubing a little. Now she is far from retired, but is taking a new and calmer approach to the whole topic. In the background, she writes a fantasy novel, occasionally creates little TikToks or reels, preferably on the topics of sexuality, gender and love in the genre, immerses herself in pen & paper role-playing games, draws fantasy characters, likes to cosplay at conventions, creates - ok. Maybe it's not quite as quiet as we thought.

In short: she's a jack-of-all-trades in the field of geekery and has been an enthusiastic FedCon/MagicCon goer for years.
