MagicCon 5 | Vortrag | Das X markiert den Schatz | Mareike

Archaeology: Film/Games vs. Reality

“We don’t follow ancient maps, we don’t discover missing treasure, and never has an X marked a significant point anywhere at any time.” Dr Henry Walton Jones Jr – better known as Indiana Jones.

Hasn’t everyone dreamed of searching for treasure and ruins in the jungle, fighting bad guys and being showered with wealth, honour and glory at the end? Well, then you shouldn’t study archaeology.

In my lecture, I will take some funny, exaggerated, sometimes realistic ideas and scenes from films that (want to) tell us something about archaeology and compare them with reality.

  • What is it really like on an excavation?
  • What dangers really await an archaeologist?
  • What stereotypes and motives are there?
  • What fascinates us about archaeology?
  • And why am I not rich?

    Lecturer: Mareike
Duration: 60 min  -  The Lecture will be held in: german
I (Mareike, 34) got a Master's degree in early historical archaeology and Roman provincial archaeology three years ago and have been working in my old job in a library ever since.

I too, like so many of us, became interested in archaeology 20 years ago through Tomb Raider, Indiana Jones and The Mummy and have wanted to become an archaeologist ever since. A few years ago I fulfilled my childhood dream. Of course, it was clear to me from the start that reality is completely different from what we are told in games and films.

I look at the profession and the academic environment with a twinkle in my eye, I am a big Lara Croft and Indiana Jones fan myself, and I will gladly report on my experiences on excavations and in my studies and compare this with famous films. And who knows - maybe I really did discover a treasure one day?!
