Non-Binary Fantasy Hero*ins

MagicCon 6 | Vortrag | Nichtbinäre Fantasy-Held*innen | Mel Grebing

Fantasy is becoming more and more diverse. This increases the hope of finding protagonists who are similar to you in ways you never dared to hope for before. But, are there already non-binary protagonists in fantasy? Non-binary characters are rare, but they do exist. In this talk, I would like to introduce some of them.

Contents of the talk:

  • What is “non-binary”?
  • Language and identity – What to do without neutral pronouns?
  • Empress of Salt and Fortune by Nghi Vo – fantasy with a frame plot
  • Finna by Nino Cipri – IKEA Portal Fantasy
  • Phoenix Extravagant by Yoon Ha Lee – The Power of Colors
  • Mentioned in passing: The Tensorate Series by Neon Yang, The Order of the Pure Moon Reflected in Water by Zen Cho, In the Watchful City by S. Qiouyi Lu
  • Time for questions

Unfortunately, the books discussed are only available in English so far. The lecture will be in German.

Mel Grebing is a non-binary autistic and fantasy fan. For a long time there was no official representation in sies favorite genre. Now sier has finally come across more than one title without having to write them himself.

Mel is over 40, works full time in human resources, and is writing (in English) toward publication. (When sier isn't sewing cosplays instead. Or playing computers.) A first short story (sadly, without an autistic protagonist) is available in June in the collection Tumbled Tales from Wandering Wave Presse.

On sie's blog, Mel occasionally writes about autism in the writing world, both as representation between the covers of a book and the challenge of being autistic on the road to publication.
