Write interesting characters

There are three of you:

• The dream prince, the white witch and the rival.
• The two comrades and the brutal officer.
• The kidnapper, the victim and the liberator.

But why is the three the magic number for the main protagonists of a novel or film? Is the villain allowed to be courageous, honest and intelligent? What qualities does a heroine need for a reader to identify with her? What characterizes the figures? Why does the audience measure main and secondary figures with different dimensions? Skywalker or Kleinschmidt – what should our literary children be called?
