The fantasy worlds in the works of J.R.R. Tolkien and George R.R. Martin are similar on the one hand, but very different on the other. This can be noticed, for example, in the research for a crossover fanfiction, in which amusing “culture shocks” occur on both sides when characters from both worlds meet, such as when the “chaste” Middle Earth meets the “bawdy” Westeros.
In the lecture Middle Earth and Westeros, on the one hand, striking similarities (such as a loyal friend named Sam or an extraordinary blond warrior woman) will be addressed, and on the other hand, the clear differences in topics such as religion and sexuality in the works of both authors. Finally, it is also addressed how fundamentally different the War of the Ring, fought in defense of freedom, and the power struggle known as the War of the Five Kings are.
