When you think of Rosie Cotton, you probably immediately picture the Shire, Samwise Gamgee, and one very special Hobbit heart. Behind the charming Hobbit lady from Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy is New Zealand actress Sarah McLeod. As Rosie Cotton, she appears in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King – and makes sure that, after all his adventures, Sam finally gets his very own happy ending.

Sarah McLeod first began working with Peter Jackson back in 1995 on Forgotten Silver. Years later, when filming for The Lord of the Rings was about to begin, she auditioned for the role of Rosie – while pregnant. Four months later, she got the part. And it got even better: At the end of The Return of the King, her daughter Maisy can actually be seen as Rosie and Sam’s baby.

Away from Middle-earth, Sarah McLeod has appeared in productions including The Last Tattoo, Get Real, A Twist in the Tale, Skin & Bone, and the New Zealand cult series Shortland Street. For many fans, however, her special connection to fantasy will always be inseparably linked to the Shire.
