MagicCon 7 | Vortrag | Hobbits im Blutrausch

At first glance, no one would think that J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings and Andrzej Sapkowki’s Witcher series could have anything to do with each other. After all, Sapkowski represents a completely different, modern style of fantasy that is more akin to George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire than to The Lord of the Rings.

But if you take a closer look, you will discover very clear references to Tolkien among the many different influences in the Witcher books. What’s more, Sapkowski adopts Tolkien’s elves, dwarves and, above all, hobbits with their exact appearance and all their characteristic features, without changing them significantly. However, he places them in completely different contexts and thus shows them in a completely new light, which will be demonstrated in the lecture using the corresponding text examples.

Lecturer: Betty Finke
Duration: 60 min  -  The Lecture will be held in: german

Betty Finke trained as a literary scholar, studied to be a teacher, but fortunately escaped this fate and now works as a freelance specialist author, translator and fantasy author.

She has been a member of the German Tolkien Society since 2002, but has been interested in all aspects of fantasy since her school days. She has taken part in RingCon/HobbitCon/MagicCon from the very beginning, first as a visitor and later with numerous talks, which have always been well received. The aim is to shed light on the motifs of fantasy and its origins in an entertaining way and to introduce the audience to contexts and authors they may not yet be familiar with.
